(Compass

(Compass

(Compass

Cao Sheng Jie)

House Church Leader Appeals for Release of Prisoners

(Compass)--Christian leader Shen Xianfeng protested his house
church movement being labeled a "cult" and called on the China
government to release his fellow workers from forced labor camps.
Sixteen leaders of the China Evangelical Fellowship, including Shen,
were each given 2-3 year labor camp terms in 1998. Released for
medical reasons, Shen reported abuse in prison. He wrote, "We were
constantly interrogated and beaten and exposed to the cold wind of
an electric fan in severe winter conditions." Shen, who is from Henan
province, vigorously defended his group against the charge of being
a cult. He said they were orthodox in faith and patriotic in outlook.
The issue of labeling house church movements as "cults" in order to
criminalize them has outraged international opinion. Most house
church movements do not join the official church on theological
grounds. Henan province has seen the most spectacular growth of
the church in all of China's provinces. China watchers estimate that
between 10-20 million believers may live there, the vast majority
         worshipping in house churches.

House Church Leaders Appeal to End Persecution

(Compass)--In the most important document to come from
unregistered churches in China in the last two decades, house church
leaders of 10 major "streams" have published a united appeal to the
Chinese government to end persecution. The seven-point appeal was
issued August 22 in Henan province, the center of the house church
movement revival that has now penetrated most provinces
throughout the country. The appeal calls on the government to
change repressive religious regulations and to release unconditionally
all house church Christians presently in labor camps. It also urges the
authorities to accept the reality that the house churches are the
mainstream of Christianity in China, with a membership far
outnumbering the government-controlled Three Self Patriotic
Movement (TSPM) churches. The house church leaders call on the
central leadership of the Communist Party to begin a dialogue with
them to seek reconciliation and to decrease confrontation. House
churches in China may contain as many as 80 million Christians, far
outnumbering the 10 million associated with TSPM churches.

Little Hope of Reconciliation Between House and Three Self
         Church

(Compass)--House church leaders are expecting a rebuff to their
August 22 appeal for dialogue with the government and the official
Protestant church, the Three Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM). A
seven-point appeal representing 10 major house church movements
called on the government to recognize the house churches as well as
the TSPM as "all members of mainstream Christianity in China."
However, a speech given by Rev. Cao Sheng Jie of the government's
China Christian Council indicates reconciliation will be difficult. Rev.
Cao said there were 10 million Christians in China now--14 times as
many as in 1949. She added, "The above facts vigorously prove that
Chinese religious believers really enjoy freedom of religious belief."
Said a Shanghai house church leader, "How can we possibly open a
dialogue with people who claim we 'really enjoy freedom of religious
belief?' They are too busy spewing propaganda for international
         consumption to talk to us."
